We launched the Book of the Month iOS app in September 2019. It's one of the most requested features/products from our users. We surveyed our users and found out that more than 70% use an iPhone (sorry Android users!) This is the project that I’m really proud of because I’m the sole designer who worked on it.
Step 1: Understand the goal (Why)
The Book of the Month website has been around for 6 years now. The wold's technology has moved towards mobile apps for the last decade. Customers are constantly on the go and providing a mobile app that fits their needs is important. By building mobile apps, we can:
Connect better with our users.
Better inform our users of new products and offers.
Reach out to younger demographics.
Stand out from the competition.
Step 2: Define the audience (Who)
Here are some of the classifications of our members:
Age (Millennials in their 20s and 30s who spend a lot of time on their social media apps).
Gender (Women).
Occupation (Mostly work in the office).
Middle/Upper class.
Step 3: Understand the customer's context and needs
Here are some user stories that help me explore the context of the users:
Member receives a push notification it's time to pick their book.
Member adds a Book of the Month to her box.
Member adds an add-on to her box.
Member views/edits account.
Member ships or skips her box.
Step 4: Solve
Before diving into designing the app, coming up with a strong information architecture is crucial to the project because it provides a framework of how the app functions.
Here is the information architecture:
Deciding what goes into the tab bar and navigation bar is one of the most important decisions I had to make when designing the app . In the end, we went with Monthly BOTM, Add-ons, and Account for the tab bar because it made most sense logically and chronologically.
Final Design
The app is now available on the App Store.
